Dadasaheb Phalke made India's first full-length feature film and is called the Father of Indian Cinema.

1931: Alam Ara

India's first sound film, directed by Ardeshir Irani, started the era of the talkies.

1957: Mother India

Mehboob Khan's film was the first Indian film nominated for an Academy Award, in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

1975: Sholay

Directed by Ramesh Sippy and starring Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra, it is among the most celebrated Hindi films.

Satyajit Ray

Pather Panchali (1955) began his career. He received an honorary Oscar and the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

India at the Oscars

A. R. Rahman won two Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire in 2009, and 'Naatu Naatu' from RRR won Best Original Song in 2023.

Filmfare Awards

Started in 1954. Dilip Kumar won the first Best Actor award for Daag and Meena Kumari the first Best Actress award for Baiju Bawra.
