1206: the Delhi Sultanate begins

Qutb-ud-din Aibak founded it. Five dynasties followed: Slave, Khalji, Tughlaq, Sayyid and Lodi.

Razia Sultana

Iltutmish's daughter, who ruled Delhi from 1236 to 1240. She remains the only woman to rule the Delhi Sultanate.

Alauddin Khalji

Introduced market controls and fixed prices to feed a large standing army.

Muhammad bin Tughlaq

Known for token currency and for shifting his capital from Delhi to Daulatabad in 1327.

Vijayanagara Empire

Founded in 1336 by Harihara and Bukka, with its capital at Hampi. Krishnadevaraya was its greatest ruler.

1526: Babur and Panipat

Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi and founded the Mughal Empire. His memoir is the Baburnama.

Akbar

Ruled from 1556 to 1605. He is known for the mansabdari system, the capital at Fatehpur Sikri and the idea of Din-i Ilahi.

Shivaji and the Marathas

Shivaji was crowned Chhatrapati at Raigad in 1674, laying the foundation of the Maratha state.
