The freedom struggle: who did what

  • Mahatma Gandhi — Satyagraha in Champaran (1917) over indigo farmers' grievances; Non-Cooperation, Dandi March (1930) and Quit India (1942).
  • Jawaharlal Nehru — first Prime Minister of independent India; presided over the 1929 Lahore session that declared Purna Swaraj.
  • Sardar Patel — first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister; negotiated the integration of the princely states.
  • Subhas Chandra Bose — led the Indian National Army; the slogan "Jai Hind" is associated with him.
  • Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev — executed in March 1931 in connection with the Lahore Conspiracy case.
  • Gopal Krishna Gokhale — founded the Servants of India Society (1905) and is regarded as Gandhi's political mentor.
  • Women leaders — Rani Lakshmibai (1857), Annie Besant (first woman president of the Indian National Congress, 1917), Sarojini Naidu (first Indian woman president of Congress, 1925, and first woman Governor of an Indian state), Madam Bhikaji Cama (unfurled an early national flag abroad in 1907).

Constitutional firsts

  • First President: Dr Rajendra Prasad. First Vice-President and second President: Dr S. Radhakrishnan (his birthday, 5 September, is Teachers' Day).
  • First woman President: Pratibha Patil (2007). First tribal President: Droupadi Murmu (2022).
  • First woman Prime Minister: Indira Gandhi (1966).
  • Chairman of the Drafting Committee: Dr B. R. Ambedkar, who was also independent India's first Law Minister.
  • First Chief Justice of India: H. J. Kania. First Chief Election Commissioner: Sukumar Sen.
  • First Field Marshal: Sam Manekshaw (1973).

Scientists and thinkers

  • Srinivasa Ramanujan — mathematician; his birth anniversary (22 December) is National Mathematics Day.
  • Jagadish Chandra Bose — showed plants respond to stimuli; invented the crescograph.
  • Satyendra Nath Bose — gave his name to bosons (Bose–Einstein statistics) — not to the theory of relativity, a common mix-up.
  • Homi J. Bhabha — father of India's nuclear programme. Vikram Sarabhai — father of India's space programme.
  • A. P. J. Abdul Kalam — the "Missile Man", 11th President.
  • M. Visvesvaraya — engineer, whose birthday (15 September) is Engineers' Day.
  • M. S. Swaminathan — a leading figure of India's Green Revolution. Verghese Kurien — father of the White Revolution (Operation Flood, Amul).

Writers, artists and performers

  • Literature: R. K. Narayan (Malgudi), Premchand, Mahasweta Devi, and Booker winners Arundhati Roy (The God of Small Things, 1997), Kiran Desai (2006) and Aravind Adiga (2008). Geetanjali Shree's Tomb of Sand, translated from Hindi, won the International Booker Prize in 2022.
  • Jnanpith Award: the first recipient was the Malayalam poet G. Sankara Kurup (1965).
  • Music: M. S. Subbulakshmi (the first musician to receive the Bharat Ratna), Ravi Shankar (sitar), Bismillah Khan (shehnai), Lata Mangeshkar (Bharat Ratna, 2001), Zakir Hussain (tabla).

Sporting heroes and firsts

  • Dhyan Chand — hockey legend; his birthday, 29 August, is National Sports Day.
  • Milkha Singh — the "Flying Sikh". P. T. Usha — narrowly missed a medal at the 1984 Olympics.
  • Karnam Malleswari — first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal (bronze, weightlifting, 2000).
  • Abhinav Bindra — India's first individual Olympic gold (shooting, 2008). Neeraj Chopra — javelin gold at Tokyo 2020 and silver at Paris 2024.
  • P. V. Sindhu — Olympic silver (2016) and bronze (2020). Mary Kom — boxing. Viswanathan Anand — India's first chess grandmaster.

  • First Indian in space: Rakesh Sharma (1984). Kalpana Chawla was the first woman of Indian origin in space (1997).
  • First Indian woman to climb Everest: Bachendri Pal (1984).
  • First woman IPS officer: Kiran Bedi (1972). First woman judge of the Supreme Court: Fathima Beevi (1989). First woman High Court judge: Anna Chandy (Kerala, 1959).
  • First Indian to win an Oscar: Bhanu Athaiya (costume design, Gandhi).
  • The first Bharat Ratna awards (1954) went to C. Rajagopalachari, C. V. Raman and S. Radhakrishnan.

How to prepare

  1. Make flashcards with the person on one side, title + one achievement on the other; drill both directions.
  2. Group by field — politics, science, arts, sport — instead of alphabetically.
  3. For every "first", also learn the year; many questions offer the right person and the wrong decade.
  4. Revisit the mix-ups: Bose the physicist versus Bose the freedom fighter; Gokhale versus Tilak (Moderate versus Extremist).
