Chandigarh, two states in one

Chandigarh is the capital of both Punjab and Haryana, and is also a union territory. The city was planned by the architect Le Corbusier.

Gujarat is Gandhinagar

Ahmedabad is the biggest city, but the capital of Gujarat is Gandhinagar. It is a planned city named after Mahatma Gandhi.

Maharashtra is Mumbai

Not Pune and not Nagpur. Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra, though the winter session of the state legislature is held in Nagpur.

Assam is Dispur

Guwahati is the largest city in Assam, but the capital is Dispur, which lies within the Guwahati urban area.

Odisha is Bhubaneswar

Cuttack was the earlier capital. Bhubaneswar, the "Temple City", became the capital of Odisha after independence.

Kerala is Thiruvananthapuram

Kochi is the commercial hub, but the state capital of Kerala is Thiruvananthapuram, in the far south of the state.

Himachal has two capitals

Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Dharamshala is used as a second capital in winter.

Andhra Pradesh is Amaravati

Hyderabad was the shared capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for ten years after 2014. It is now the capital of Telangana alone.
