Dance and its state

Bharatanatyam is from Tamil Nadu, Kuchipudi from Andhra Pradesh, Odissi from Odisha, Manipuri from Manipur and Sattriya from Assam. Kerala has two: Kathakali and Mohiniyattam.

Two music traditions

Hindustani music is the northern tradition and Carnatic the southern. Both are built on raga, the melody, and tala, the rhythm cycle.

Instruments and masters

Ravi Shankar played the sitar, Bismillah Khan the shehnai and Zakir Hussain the tabla. M. S. Subbulakshmi was a leading Carnatic vocalist.

Painting traditions

Madhubani is from Bihar, Warli from Maharashtra, Pattachitra from Odisha, Kalamkari from Andhra Pradesh and Tanjore from Tamil Nadu.

Textiles

Banarasi silk is from Uttar Pradesh, Kanjeevaram from Tamil Nadu, Pochampally ikat from Telangana, Patola from Gujarat and Pashmina from Kashmir.

Theatre and puppetry

Yakshagana is from Karnataka, Tamasha from Maharashtra and Ramlila is performed across the north. Kathputli puppetry is from Rajasthan.

UNESCO intangible heritage

Yoga was inscribed in 2016, the Kumbh Mela in 2017, Durga Puja in Kolkata in 2021 and the Garba of Gujarat in 2023.
