ISRO is formed, 1969

The Indian Space Research Organisation was formed on 15 August 1969. Its headquarters are in Bengaluru. Vikram Sarabhai is regarded as the father of the space programme.

Aryabhata, 1975

India's first satellite, named after the ancient astronomer. It was launched by a Soviet rocket.

Rohini, 1980

The first satellite placed in orbit by an Indian rocket, the SLV-3. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam was project director.

Rakesh Sharma, 1984

The first Indian citizen in space, aboard the Soviet Soyuz T-11.

Chandrayaan-1, 2008

India's first mission to the Moon. Data from instruments on board contributed to the discovery of water molecules on the lunar surface.

Mangalyaan, 2014

The Mars Orbiter Mission entered Mars orbit on 24 September 2014 on its first attempt, a first for any country.

104 satellites, 2017

PSLV-C37 launched 104 satellites in a single mission, a record at the time.

Chandrayaan-3, 2023

The Vikram lander touched down near the Moon's south pole on 23 August 2023. India became the fourth country to soft-land on the Moon.
