The early years (1932-1970)

  • 1928: the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is formed.
  • 1932: India plays its first Test, at Lord's, England, under captain C. K. Nayudu.
  • 1952: India's first Test victory, against England at Madras (now Chennai), by an innings and 8 runs, with a big role for Vinoo Mankad.
  • 1971: under Ajit Wadekar, India wins Test series in the West Indies and in England in the same year, its first away series wins.

The one-day era begins (1970s-1990s)

  • 1974: India plays its first One Day International, against England at Leeds.
  • 1975 and 1979: India does little at the first World Cups.
  • 1983: at Lord's, Kapil Dev's team beats the two-time champion West Indies by 43 runs to win the World Cup. Mohinder Amarnath was Man of the Match in the final. Kapil's unbeaten 175 against Zimbabwe in the league stage is remembered as one of the great ODI innings.
  • 1985: India wins the Benson & Hedges World Championship of Cricket in Australia.
  • 1987: India and Pakistan co-host the World Cup, the first held outside England.
  • 1989: a 16-year-old Sachin Tendulkar debuts in a Test, against Pakistan.

The modern era (2000-2010)

  • 2000: Sourav Ganguly takes over as captain and builds an aggressive, young team.
  • 2001: at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, India beats Australia after following on, thanks to V. V. S. Laxman's 281 and Rahul Dravid's 180. Harbhajan Singh takes India's first Test hat-trick in that match.
  • 2002: India and Sri Lanka share the ICC Champions Trophy. India wins the NatWest Trophy final at Lord's.
  • 2003: India reaches the World Cup final but loses to Australia. Tendulkar is Player of the Tournament with 673 runs.
  • 2007: under M. S. Dhoni, India wins the first T20 World Cup in South Africa, beating Pakistan in the final by 5 runs.
  • 2008: the Indian Premier League (IPL) starts. Rajasthan Royals win the first season.

Titles and records (2011 onwards)

  • 2011: India wins the World Cup at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, beating Sri Lanka, with Dhoni finishing the match with a six.- 2013: India wins the Champions Trophy in England. Dhoni becomes the only captain to win all three major ICC white-ball trophies (T20 World Cup, World Cup, Champions Trophy).
  • 2013: Tendulkar retires after his 200th Test, at Wankhede, with 100 international centuries (51 in Tests, 49 in ODIs).
  • 2024: India wins the T20 World Cup in Barbados, beating South Africa by 7 runs.
  • 2025: India wins the Champions Trophy, and the Indian women's team wins the Women's Cricket World Cup.

Grounds and trophies

  • Eden Gardens (Kolkata), Wankhede (Mumbai), Chepauk (Chennai), Feroz Shah Kotla, now Arun Jaitley Stadium (Delhi), and the Narendra Modi Stadium (Ahmedabad), the largest cricket stadium in the world by capacity.
  • The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is for Tests between India and Australia; the Pataudi Trophy for Tests in England.
  • The Ranji Trophy is India's premier first-class competition, named after K. S. Ranjitsinhji.
